Pride Month: Enhancing LGBTQ+ Healthcare and Inclusion

Every June, we celebrate Pride Month, a time to recognize the LGBTQ+ community, honor its history, and advocate for equality. While Pride is a time of joy and celebration, it is also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of inclusive healthcare.

At Snoqualmie Valley Health, we are committed to providing safe, affirming, and equitable care to all patients, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. We recognize that members of the LGBTQ+ community often face barriers to healthcare, including discrimination, lack of access to providers knowledgeable about LGBTQ+ health, and fear of stigma.

LGBTQ+ Barriers in Healthcare

Many LGBTQ+ individuals report negative experiences in medical settings, leading some to delay or avoid care. Studies show that one in five transgender individuals has been refused healthcare due to their identity, and LGBTQ+ youth are at increased risk for mental health struggles due to discrimination and social stigma.

Comprehensive healthcare must include:

  • Gender-affirming care for transgender and nonbinary individuals
  • Mental health resources that support LGBTQ+ challenges
  • Inclusive reproductive health services
  • Education for providers to ensure competent and compassionate care
How We Support LGBTQ+ Patients

At Snoqualmie Valley Health, we strive to create a welcoming environment by:

  • Offering gender-inclusive language on medical forms
  • Providing LGBTQ+ health education to our staff
  • Ensuring that our policies protect against discrimination
  • Building a provider team that is trained in affirming care
How to Show Support During Pride Month
  • Educate Yourself – Learn about LGBTQ+ health issues and challenges.
  • Be an Ally – Support LGBTQ+ colleagues, friends, and patients.
  • Advocate for Change – Speak up for inclusive policies in healthcare.

As we celebrate Pride, let’s continue striving for a world where everyone has access to compassionate, inclusive care—not just in June, but every day of the year.
