Back to School Body Basics

As families across the Snoqualmie Valley gear up for the new school year, it’s important to remember that a child’s physical and developmental health directly impacts their academic success. From backpack safety to communication and motor skills, the back-to-school season is an ideal time to check in on your child’s readiness.

Backpack Safety: Preventing Strain Early

Backpacks that are too heavy or worn improperly can lead to neck, shoulder, and back discomfort. The American Physical Therapy Association recommends that a child’s backpack weigh no more than 10–15% of their body weight, sit in the middle of the back, and be carried using both shoulder straps.

Encourage children to clean out unneeded items weekly and use lockers or cubbies when available. If your child reports pain or fatigue after school, a physical therapist can provide a posture assessment, movement screening, and strategies to improve endurance.

Speech and Language Readiness

Communication is a key part of classroom success. Children rely on speech and language skills to follow directions, express themselves, and connect with peers. If your child struggles with articulation, limited vocabulary, or understanding instructions, a speech-language evaluation may be beneficial.

Kindergarten readiness includes more than academics—strong communication and social interaction skills are essential for a smooth start to the school year.

Fine Motor Skills for the Classroom

If your child has difficulty with handwriting, scissor use, or focusing during seated tasks, they may benefit from occupational therapy. Signs of fine motor delays can include poor pencil grasp, hand fatigue, or slow task completion.

Pediatric occupational therapists use play-based techniques to improve fine motor coordination and boost participation in school activities.
